This watch in the Giuliano Mazzuoli collection derives from an automobile transmission, where the gears of the transmission has been transformed into the case of the watch and a part of the clutch has become the dial. The watch almost has the scent of a mechanical workshop. It respects the traditions of all of Giuliano Mazzuoli watches, and it has the ambition to be something more than just an instrument to measure time.
Like all of Giuliano Mazzuoli’s watch, even this one is designed in Italy and handcrafted in Switzerland with a movement and complication of high-quality Swiss watchmaking. The stainless steel case has a large dimension, and the crown is positioned at 2 o’clock.
Mazzuoli asks “What is more beautiful than mechanics? I take elements designed for their function without taking the aesthetics into consideration at all. I used to frequently watch the transmission of a car being taken apart and then rebuilt while I waited anxiously to be able to take the car for a ride afterwards. Today I look at it in a different way. I look at it in such a different way that I take inspiration from the mechanical parts, and transform them into a timepiece. The gear has become the case, and the disc of the clutch into an original dial on multiple levels in three-dimensions. The crown that is used to wind and set the time is identical to the spline shaft (with a look of nostalgia he says the mechanics in Tuscany used to call it the “celery stick”) that transmits the rotation of the motor to the gears. The hands of the watch are inspired from a sort of compass that used to sit on a mechanic’s bench.” He designed “Trasmissione Meccanica,” remaining in the world of sports cars, and this time that which transmits energy from the motor to the wheels of the car was reproduced in the case and the dial of the watch.
